PROJECT
ELRP
Emergency Locust Response Project
Budget
USD 2.4 million
Duration
28 Sep 2022–31 Jan 2024
A desert locust upsurge in Ethiopia affected seven regions in the country, with the invasion spreading to 294 districts since 2019. In order to manage the invasion, Ethiopia Emergency Locust Response Project (EELRP) was designed and is being funded by the World Bank (WB) since June 2020. On behalf of the Government of Ethiopia, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture of Ethiopia, UNOPS will implement a component of the project - Livelihoods Protection and Rehabilitation in Tigray Regional State.
Beyond the immediate control measures deployed to curtail the proliferation and spread of the locusts, the next priority is to help protect the poor and vulnerable in locust-affected areas. The overall objective of the project is to safeguard the poor and vulnerable from human capital and asset loss, enhance their access to food, rehabilitate food production systems and livelihoods that have been damaged or destroyed by swarms and strengthen national systems for preparedness.
